Producer/singer/cinematographer Pav Dharia micro-interviewed

banner talks exclusively with the Melbourne based producer kicking up a storm in Punjab!

Pav Dharia with the late Betsy

1. Introduce yourself…

I’m a music producer, a cinematographer, a director and a singer. I also consider myself the worst cook in the world. I live in the amazing city of Melbourne in Australia. I consider waking up before noon to be early, and watching me eat dinner at 2AM should never come as a surprise to anyone who knows me…

2. What made you want to get into making music?

Music has always been a big part of my life. My entire family values it very highly and seeing as my father was a student of the great Yamla Jatt, it would almost be disrespectful of me not to be involved in the music industry.

3. If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be?

I’ll pick two very different ones, US electronic dubstep artist Skrillex & A. R. Rahman. Skrillex makes me want to jump off my chair and go insane no matter what song he makes. A.R. Rahman has a magical way of infusing almost anything and everything and somehow turning it into a masterpiece. Their styles are obviously completely different yet they are masters in their respective genres. I’d love to get a sneak peek at their mindset; not necessarily how they make music, but the way they think about making music.

4. What do you think makes you different?

My hair, because it can sometimes make me look like the most eligible bachelor, or turn me into a homeless man. But in all seriousness, I think it’s the fact that I can take a track from paper to screen, not just to speakers.

5. What’s playing on your car stereo these days?

She will be loved” by Maroon 5 and also “Rabba” by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Yes, I know neither are new…

6. You’ve released two albums in the space of 5 weeks, can there really be any more to come this year?

I have so many that it’d be unfair to only name one! My Turn was released last month by MV Records/Lokdhun; although most of the tracks had been released previously in digital single format. Out this week is Red, my debut album for Speed Records and I’ve collaborated on it with different artists from Punjab and also Australia, plus I’m singing on this album again too. In terms of what’s to come; well I’m working with Gippy Grewal and the king Khans (Feroz & Kamal Khan) on a few releases for the future. No firm release dates on those but I’ll keep posted!

The album Red is out now on Speed Records India. Find out where to buy it here
