Chakdey.com Interviews Silinder Pardesi! |
For those who don’t know who you are introduce yourself… Silinder Pardesi started his singing career at a very young age, with encouragement from his family and friends. Singing in Sikh temples and being influenced by his idol Mohd. Rafi Sahib, Silinder gained confidence and widened his singing and musical knowledge. He enjoys listening to world music and believes that music and singing is an integral part of his life. When he came to England he was taught singing and classical techniques by various teachers (Ustads).
In 1982 he was joined by other members and formed as PARDESI. Their first major turning point was winning the prestigious 'Asian Song Contest' in 1986, after which they released their first album, a collection of Sikh religious songs and hymns. All proceeds from this album were donated to charity.
In early 1987 they decided to record their first bhangra album titled "Nashay Diye Band Botlay". Although this album was not a massive commercial success, the fresh ideas of the younger members mixed with the tradition of the other members pointed the way forward.
Disappointed but not disheartened, they started to write and compose for their next album. It soon became apparent that this would be the most radical bhangra album yet and was named "Pump Up The Bhangra". It was this best selling album that established Pardesi as one of the most sought-after bands in the country and certainly the most innovative.
Pardesi's "Pump Up The Bhangra" captured the imagination of the asian youth with its insistent westernised beats and traditional eastern melodies.
1990 saw the release of their fourth album titled "Shake Yer Pants". This album comprises four of the most popular bhangra songs of all time, which have been covered by Pardesi to cater for the new generation of bhangra listeners, and several original tracks from Pardesi which have equally made their mark in the bhangra history.
How successful were your last two albums? Very successful had an excellent feedback from all over the world.Your signed to Tips which is a big label in India, how did you get signed to them?
Silinder Pardesi welcomed by the head of TIPS Music. I was head hunted as an established UK Artist.
What are your views on the current state of the Bhangra industry? I have lot of respect for all the GOOD upcoming producers but non-for those producers who do not put quality first as rubbish portrays wrong image to the western media. Lets keep quality I say PLEASE LEARN THE TRADE.
Now, you have a new album coming out…tell us more about this? This is a very special album in my career as it is the first album recorded in Mumbai.
You’ve collaborated with Rishi Rich, Juggy D & Veronica…how did this come about? I have always rated Rishi as a producer and enjoyed working with Juggy D and Veronica. I featured on their project 2.9.Was the album not supposed to be called Akhiyaan with production from Sukshinder Shinda, Desi Dark Child, Kam Frantic and Ghost Town Productions? Hey all this is news to me where has s this news come from the only thing I know is I recorded a song called Akhiyia which will be released soon. Respect to Sukhshinder Shinda.Due to the state of the Bhangra industry many artists are coming out with poor videos and some artists are having albums out with no videos at all…you’ve got a really good video to accompany your album. How important do you think it is to have a good video to go with an album?
As I said in my music career I always put quality first. The main killer of the Industry is PIARACY so I hate people who do piracy as they are killing the industry. PLEASE support the industry so all the artists can produce quality products. Also what are your views to Zee Music’s major cut down on the Bhangra videos played? As mentioned before every channel has their high standards and want to maintain them. I respect that, as all bad cheap products should not be shown. Please all lets maintain some Industry standard Everyone wants to make quick money but fail to maintain good standards i.e. spend money to produce good products QUALITY NOT QUANTITY.
What else can we expect from you in the near future? With the blessing of the mighty god and all my fans hope to do playback singing in Bollywood movies and carry on producing quality products.
