The biggest Asian Mela in the West Midlands is set to break records again as visitor numbers are expected to exceed last year as the festival plays host to International Superstar Gippy Grewal. On 5-6th July, Victoria Park in Smethwick is hosting the Sandwell and Birmingham Mela 2014. Over 100,000 people attended the two day festival last year and this year’s event is set to attract people from all around the region.
Now running into its fourth year, the free Sandwell and Birmingham Mela is situated within the heart of the community. It is a weekend extravaganza that combines live music performances, stalls, sport, food, arts, community showcases and a funfair. Headline sponsor Star Plus in association with Lebara Mobile, the Sandwell and Birmingham Mela is jointly organised by Sandwell Council, Raaj FM and Remarkable Events. At this year’s Mela, an array of global and home-grown Asian music stars will perform for visitors. For the first ever time, music superstar Gippy Grewal will take the stage in Victoria Park. Gippy has carefully developed a diverse and successful music career scoring a hot with his first album, ‘Chak Lai’. Alongside Gippy, Bhangra legend Malkit Singh and newcomer San2 are set to entertain. Danny Singh, Director of Sandwell & Birmingham Mela said,
The Sandwell and Birmingham Mela is back and this year’s line-up is the best yet. We have pulled out all the stops and booked an international superstar in Gippy Grewal. He’s a very popular artist and we just know that he’s going to pull the crowds in.
Apart from the music, there is of course plenty of other things lined up. The Mela is a real community event and we try to reflect this through showcasing regional dance and musical talent.
Sarika Shankarnarayan, Assistant Vice President & Marketing Head Star UK & Europe said,
Star Network is very pleased about our continued partnership with the mela and like every year we look forward to making this community event in the heart of West Midlands a huge success.
