Asian Arts Agency present the legendary UK bhangra group Alaap in Bristol once again for an evening of bhangra at St George’s. Ready to launch you into the festival season with a night of celebratory and exciting music that will get Bristol fans up out of their seats and dancing, Alaap are a spectacular experience for fans who’ve followed them over the years or new converts to the bhangra scene.
Fronted by the UK’s “Godfather of Bhangra” Channi Singh OBE, Alaap have been going strong since 1977. Fusing the traditional sounds of the Punjab with western influences and other street music styles in the 70s, bhangra developed into the trademark British Asian sound becoming one of the biggest bands of the 80s. Channi was a pioneer of this new sound and has continued to drive the scene forward ever since.
In 1992, Alaap became the first British Asian bhangra band to perform in Pakistan. Channi was awarded a Lifetime Achievement for Punjabi music from the Lord Mayor of Leicester and appointed an honorary Senior Lecturer of Music at Liverpool University. In 2012, Channi was appointed OBE for services to bhangra music, charity, and the community in Hounslow. Over the years, he has also composed music for Feroz Khan‘s films and Bollywood films such as Yalgaar, Shaktimaan and Janasheen.
