Koi Labda is a Punjabi track which discusses how one yearns for their lover. It was written and composed by band members Haroon Shahid and Hasan Omer, who borrowed from the legendary qawwal Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, immaculately using the track “Mainu Chad Ke Kali” in the lyrics.

Chakwal Group – Wah Wah Jhulara
Season 5, Episode 5
Coke Studio always throws up the most amazing artists, this series being no exception. Chakwal Group may well be the find of the series, bringing the tranquil sounds and rich cultural heritage of the Potohar region in North East Pakistan and Azad Kashmir. This group of men sing in chorus with breathtaking accuracy and their emotions have been captured perfectly by the executive producer of Coke Studio; Rohail Hyatt.

Farhan Rais KhanSeher
Season 5, Episode 5
You’ve probably noticed a trend, the last 3 videos have all been from Episode 5, all we can say is Coke Studio ended the series with a bang! This track is completely different from the rest in the manner that it is an instrumental, but not just any kind. It combines the classic Sitar with a completely crazy innovation from Farhan Rais Khan, the son of the internationally renowned legend Ustad Rais Khan. We can’t describe it any further all we ask is you click play and check it for yourself!

Fareed Ayaz & Abu MuhammadRung
Season 5, Episode 4
This is a Sufi Kalaam written by Amir Khusro and is famed by being recited to this very day by many Qawaals. Having performed in Series 4 with Kangna, Fareed Ayaz & Abu Muhammad return with another well received composition. They present the historic form of qawaali again this year, singing the classic sufi poetry of love and devotion for the beloved, through a wonderful journey of musical colors; ‘Rung‘.

Bohemia & Chakwal Group – Kandyaari Dhol Geet
Season 5, Episode 4
Rap da Badshah aka The Punjabi Rapper Bohemia makes an appearance alongside the Chakwal Group who have already appeared in our review, such was their impact. The track fuses pure folk dialect vocals with the rapping of Bohemia, along the story of contrasting tragedies of spiritual love and worldly materialism.

Fareed Ayaz & Abu Muhammad – Khabaram Raseeda
Season 5, Episode 2
Fareed Ayaz & Abu Muhammad have become a mainstay of Coke Studio, this is another track from the series which features their mindblowing vocals. Once again they present the works of Amir Khusro, this time partly in Persian and partly in Urdu, in Raag Bageshri. The track discusses the forthcoming arrival of their beloved, the lyrics are majestic and we definitely advise you to check the translation on the official website!

The world is intoxicated with colour, fragrance, beauty and the bloom of youth,
News of his coming came from every entity in the universe,
News has reached me tonight that you, O beautiful beloved, will come

Atif Aslam – Rabba Sacheya
Season 5, Episode 2
Next up we have Pakistani crossover Bollywood superstar Atif Aslam, giving a rendition of the works of Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Sufi master Khwaja Ghulam Fareed. Atif Aslam also featured the track on his album Meri Kahani back in 2008, this time reworking it to include ‘Meda Ishq Vi Toon’. This may well be one of the tracks of the Season, it has the modern twists in Atif Aslam’s vocals, backing vocals from the Viccaji sisters, great composition from Rohail Hyatt and an amazing balance of percussion and strings.

Tahir Mithu – Pere Pavandi Saan
Season 5, Episode 2
Something completely different with a modern funky sound and in the unique language of Sindhi, crossing over from Southern Pakistan into Rajasthan in India. The sweet tones of Tahir Mithu blesses us with Pere Pavandi Saan, a song about the folk legend of Sassi Punnu written by 18th Century Sindhi poet, Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai. The track is from the perspective of Sassi when she wonders in search of her lover, as well as having a Sufi perspective of searching for God.

Chakwal Group & Meesha Shafi – Ishq Aap Bhe Awalla
Season 5, Episode 2

We come to one of our favourite tracks of the series featuring a female singer who took the world by storm on Arif Lohar’s Alif Allah/Jugni rendition in Season 3, with close to 10m hits on Youtube! Thats right, Meesha Shafi makes an appearance with the Chakwal Group on this catchy number. The song tells of a woman filling her clay pot with water, whose mind is wondering away thinking of her lover; “In this love, my friends, you can’t even say anything, You can neither shout nor can you stay quiet”…

The season has had its ups and downs but has continued on where the previous Coke Studio’s have started, with a great mixture of folk and fusion music. The true essence of its goals remain, yet it has managed to flex its arms in creativity, with new artists and ideas on board. Now the baton has been handed over, we eagerly await Coke Studio @ MTV to showcase the massive talents of music from India in series 2! Stay tuned to Chakdey.Com for a review!
