Canadian band Delhi 2 Dublin will be bringing its high-energy Celtic, bhangra, and dance music to UK audiences, thanks to Arts Council England National portfolio organisation Asian Arts Agency.
The five-piece band – dubbed the “United Nations of rock and roll” – will embark on a seven-stop tour, starting at Bristol’s Trinity Centre on 23 August and ending at London’s Rich Mix on 5 September.
Asian Arts Agency is a Bristol-based organisation that supports artists and practitioners to deliver traditional and contemporary South Asian arts.
For the Dehli 2 Dublin tour, the agency has been working in partnership with artist agency Frusion, who specialize in folk, roots, fusion and world music.
The band’s style is hard to describe: ‘Imagine the energy and cultural fervour of a huge Indian wedding party colliding with a bunch of drunken Irishmen dancing on a wooden table with fiddles!’ (Evolving Music)
Delhi 2 Dublin made its riotous start with a performance at Vancouver Celtic Festival in 2006 and since has released five world music chart-topping albums including 2012’s Turn Up The Stereo. Band members include singer Sanjay Seran, Tarun Nayar on tabla and electronics, Sara Fitzpatrick on fiddle, Andrew Kim on electric sitar and guitar, and Ravi Binning on dhol and tabla.
The UK tour follows on the back of a North American summer tour. Delhi 2 Dublin has performed at festivals worldwide and even performed for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge plus an audience of 300,000 on Canada Day at Parliament Hill in Ottawa.
Jaswinder Singh, Director Asian Arts Agency says: ‘Delhi 2 Dublin is one of the leading contemporary Asian music bands originating from Canada. We are pleased to be presenting this tour which offers engagement and performance opportunities for the UK audiences and promoters. The tour is significant for our aim to increase high quality and international contemporary Asian music touring in the UK.’
Nick Green, Combined Arts Relationship Manager, South West, Arts Council England says,
“Pulling off the Dehli 2 Dublin tour is a real coup for Asian Arts Agency, who have made a name for themselves in touring high quality Asian music and arts across the South West and the UK. It’s fantastic to see our arts organisations working more internationally, demonstrating how British arts and culture can excel on the world stage. Don’t miss this amazingly energetic band!”
